Smoke firing: Earth, Air, Fire, Water is a two-day course led by ceramic artist Claire Bevacqua.
This exciting two-day course gives students the opportunity to experiment with the ancient technique of smoke firing.
During day one, students will be guided through hand building techniques using red earthenware, decorating with slips and burnishing surfaces to a high sheen in our Ceramics Studio.
On day two students will be guided through masking ceramic work to create geometric or organic patterns during the smoke firing process. Students will then participate in setting a fire bed and see the smoke firing process take place in our garden. Ceramic pieces will be placed in metal bin of combustible materials to produce a carbonized effect on the ceramics, resulting in distinctive smoked surface patterns. Pieces will then be cleaned down in a water bath and polished with wax.
This course is great for beginners, improvers and experimenters! Students will make up to 3 small objects (such as pinch pots, tiles or small models) to smoke fire, which can be taken home by students.
This course is suitable for those with little to no experience of working with ceramics. All materials costs are included. Size restrictions apply.
