5 week course: Maiolica (Ceramics) - Camden Art Centre

Maiolica is a 5 week ceramics course led by ceramic artist Yung Cheuk Chung.

Maiolica is the name given to painted earthenware made using a decoration technique on white glaze, used as a method of storytelling through ceramics. Maiolica was first developed by the Italian potters of the Renaissance period.

During this course, students will create their own Maiolica inspired decorative earthenware pieces using press moulding and slab building techniques. Students will then be guided through glazing using tin-glaze and surface decoration in colours using oxides. The outcome of the surface decoration can range from simply patterns to paintings of an image in bright vivid colours.

This course will cover:

  • Press moulding and slab building techniques
  • Maiolica decorative techniques using glazes and oxides

Artwork and objects made during this course will be fired in Camden Art Centre’s kiln, and can be taken home by students.

The Artist

Yung Cheuk Chung first discovered working with clay when he was taught to handbuild in 2010 in Hong Kong, he later moved to London to study his BA at Central Saint Martins and MA at Royal College of Art in Ceramics.

Yung Cheuk Chung’s work is inspired by factories in the UK, observing how components join together, the elegance of plant design, the balance of straight line and curve. He never seeks them as a functional object but as an object to capture the pure movement and relationship between each component.
His work involves throwing, press moulding and slip casting, allowing him to have the flexibility to make each piece unique by distorting the form while having a standard quality of shape and scale to unify them. The outcome of his work attempts to discover the purity of the designed components and place them in a different context.
