Art Theory: Textile Narratives: Politics, Belonging and Material Culture
Wednesdays 10, 17 & 24 August, 6.30 – 9.00pm
Taking the current exhibition Making & Unmaking curated by Duro Olowu as a starting point, we will consider key themes such as cultural identity and appropriation, textiles and protest, collections and bricolage as well as gender stereotypes. Each week, participants will cover two distinct areas in order to understand the wider meaning of the works included in the exhibition. On the final day participants will have an opportunity to take part in a ‘show and tell’ session, where we will deconstruct a treasured object from their own collection.
Faye McNulty is an independent designer and textile print specialist. She has worked with artists including Yinka Shonibare and Sonia Boyce, and her fashion clients include Topshop and Victoria Beckham. McNulty also teaches at Chelsea College of Art and Central St Martins. Read more.
Dr. Sian Weston is a curator, researcher and lecturer with specialist knowledge of fashion and textiles. She teaches fashion theory at the London College of Fashion, and cultural theory at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her curatorial work has involved ambitious projects with the public, working with artists including Glenn Ligon, Bedwyr Williams, and Atelier van Lieshout; she has collaborated with organisations including the Hayward Gallery, the V&A and Brixton Prison.
