Get the Message
Get the Message: A Special Educational Needs schools project
Get the Message aims to increase creative opportunities within the arts for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities; to foster a sense of belonging at Camden Arts Centre and to encourage confidence and independence through collaborative activities that champion all forms of communication and self-expression.
Working with young people and teachers from local SEN schools in collaboration with artists, Get the Message offers innovative ways of experiencing contemporary art practice both in the galleries and working with artists. We will be working with artists Andrew Omoding, Betsy Dadd and India Harvey throughout the academic year, partnering with Action Space to support an artist with learning disabilities to co-lead the project. It is our vision, along with the support of ActionSpace as a partner, to improve access and opportunities to the arts for artists with learning disabilities and to increase participation, education and training provision.
Our partner SEN schools are from the boroughs of Camden, Brent and Barnet and each school visits Camden Arts Centre twice a term throughout the year. The year culminates in an exhibition of students’ work and a series of events in July.
Get the Message is now in its fifteenth year and has been running since 2002.
“The highlight has been watching the students who normally do not engage excel and show motivation and brilliant interaction during the activities”.
– Teacher, Mapledown School
“This project has made such an incredible difference to raising the pupil’s self-esteem, they are not afraid to make mistakes and have really grown through participating in all of the activities, techniques and exploration of materials throughout the year”.
– Teacher, Woodfield School
The project is currently supported by The Big Give, The Childhood Trust, City Bridge Trust, David Solomons Trust, The Dischma Charitable Trust, John Horniman’s Children’s Trust, The Sobell Foundation. We are grateful to John Lyons Charity and The Chapman Trust for their support for our Education programme.
