A Glimmer of Hope - Camden Art Centre

As artist-in-residence, Ethiopian artist Assesfa Gebrekidan conceived a large-scale sculptural installation in Gallery 3, taking shape in relation to the 19th Century windowed space.

Following an open-ended process of discovery, Gebrekidan had been informed by new acquaintances and local found materials, for his first project in the UK.

In his best-known work, plastic containers of vibrant colours, shapes and sizes are assembled into illuminated abstract constructions. Manipulating the work’s environment, Gebrekidan increasingly favours temporary situations and transient materials that survive only in photographic documentation.

Born in 1973, Assefa Gebrekidan graduated from the Addis Ababa University Fine Art and Design School in sculpture in 1996. In 2004 he exhibited in the Dak’Art Biennial, Dakar, Senegal and Le Lieu Unique, Nantes, France.

This project was part of Africa 05, the biggest celebration of African culture ever organised in Britain.
