A Ship Called Jesus - Camden Art Centre

A Ship Called Jesus, charted the metaphorical journey of African peoples though the symbols, rhetoric and morality of the English Christian Church, from the days of slavery to the present.

In three installations, which use slide projections, video images, taped sounds of gospel music and spoken texts, as well as a lake of gently lapping water, Keith Piper (b. 1960) explored the ways in which Church and State have attempted to alienate people of African descent from their culture, and the subsequent struggle of black congregations to come to term with their histories.
