Do-It-Yourself - Camden Art Centre

Curated by Song-Ming Ang as part of his residency held by Royal Over-Seas League, Hospitalfield Arts and Camden Arts Centre, this series of events continues to unpick Ang’s interests in music and its relationship to the amateur.

Alongside screenings, workshops, performances and talks, Ang will present Music Manuscript (2013-), an ongoing series of works using music manuscript paper as a basis for creating visual compositions, and a selection of his films.

A listening party featuring record store owners and employees playing and talking about their favourite music, hosted by residency artist Song-Ming Ang.  Participating stores include Brill, Honest Jon’s and Reckless Records. Aimed at aspiring music writers, Jennifer Lucy Allan, Online Editor of The Wire Magazine leads a music-writing workshop, offering an introduction to music journalism. This workshop will look at key areas of music writing. It will cover basic interview tips and techniques via The Lou Reed Scenario; how to structure features, focusing on the perfect introduction, and practical advice such as how to get in contact with editors, and pitching your ideas. This event is part of the Do-It-Yourself series curated by artist-in-residence, Song-Ming Ang.

As an artist whose practice deals exclusively with sound and music, Song-Ming Ang’s lecture performance explores the seductive qualities of music by drawing on his personal interest in popular culture. From cover versions to guilty pleasures and propaganda pop, Song-Ming Ang provides keen observations and cheeky confessions on how we succumb to the artifice of music and film…

Film Screening: No Idea But in Things

Screening of No Idea But in Things (Hauke Harder and Viola Rusche, 2012), a documentary on the life and work of American composer Alvin Lucier, whose works draw on the everyday in an understated and poetic way.

The documentary accompanies the American composer Alvin Lucier (b 1931) on concert travels to The Hague (Netherlands) and Zug (Switzerland), as he comments on his œuvre – from his early live electronics performances up to the premiere of his ensemble piece Panorama 2 in 2011. One of Lucier’s key works, I Am Sitting in a Room (1969), is introduced as a central structuring device in the film. Visited at his home in Middletown, Connecticut, Lucier offers rare insights into the beginnings of his pioneering works.
