Douglas Huebler - Camden Art Centre

This first substantial exhibition in Britain of works by pioneer American conceptual artist Douglas Huebler (1924-1997), focused on his works of the 1960s and 1970s.

Each piece features a group of photographs (self-portraits, images of friends, family and strangers) together with a text setting out the parameters that dictate the work’s form, or instructions for the viewer. The exhibition highlighted the humane and humorous aspects of Huebler’s work, which is perhaps what sets him apart from his peers, and comes at a time when many contemporary artists are interested in this kind of playful, comic conceptualism. Huebler is a key figure in post-war American art and is represented in major museum collections in Europe and the US. The exhibition had been researched and jointly selected by art historian and critic Mark Godfrey.
