Filming in the Dark

Artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz curates an evening of films expanding temporal and geographic relationships at the heart of her ongoing project The Voyage Out.

The project investigates the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear accident and the birth of a new land in Pacific south of Japan through a speculative fiction exploring the limits of the visible and the invisible, of life and non-life, of mutiny and mutation. The evening will make for a constellation of films including recent works by the artist as well as films by Lis Rhodes, Sandra Lahire, Barbara Hammer and Judith Noble.

Ana Vaz (b. 1986, Brazil) is an artist and filmmaker. Recent presentations of her work include Tate Modern (London), TABAKALERA (San Sebastián), New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Cinéma du Réel (Paris) – where she was awarded the festival’s Grand Prix for Há Terra. Her work has also featured in major group shows such as the Moscow Biennial of Young Art, Videobrasil and the Dhaka Art Summit.
She was the recipient of the Kazuko Trust Award presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in recognition of artistic excellence and innovation in her moving image work and has recently integrated the collection of the CNAP (Centre National des Arts Plastiques).
