Garden Nights: Alaya and other films by Nathaniel Dorsky
Camden Art Centre presented a small-scale outdoor screening of silent 16mm films by American experimental filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky.
The programme centred on Alaya, a film which left a deep impression on artist Olga Balema after she saw Dorsky present it some years ago. In the film sand, photographed in a variety of different places and conditions, becomes a means of interacting with the granular surface of the film stock, intermingling image and medium. Alaya was shown alongside three other films made by Dorsky over the last two decades: The Visitation, February, and Avraham. The programme has been selected through a dialogue between Nathaniel Dorsky, Olga Balema and curator Will Rose.
