Inherent Quality  - Camden Art Centre

with Catherine Osterberg and Jacques Rogers.

Catherine Osterberg and Jacques Rogers’ recent work often interrogates the relationship between art and its modes of perception, drawing attention to the interplay between form, content and audience. Inherent Quality, a web link rendered in vinyl and installed across the windows of the café, requires viewers to actively seek out its content. Here, the link becomes the work itself—a static, sign-like display untethered from temporal and physical constraints. It functions simultaneously as cultural icon, practical marker, glyph and conceptual proposition.

The Artists

The piece questions the conditions of conventional exhibition formats by asking what happens when the artefact is not the content, but the route to it? If a form’s so-called ‘inherent quality’ becomes indistinguishable from its image, then Inherent Quality suggests that the work may instead reside somewhere between the point of access and its content. Left unchallenged, art risks submission to the demand for visibility, where documentation becomes a substitute for presence and a vehicle for publicity.

Osterberg and Rogers resist this logic by operating within the space between physical encounter and digital circulation. In doing so, they interrupt the transactional dynamics of image culture and redirect attention to the structures that mediate reception itself.
