This exhibition of work by Swiss artist Marie José Burki included both recent and earlier video installations, providing an important opportunity for British audiences to experience her work.
Using a straightforward documentary filming style, Burki looks towards her animal and human objects without romanticising or interpreting them. The viewer is brought close to the subjects, who are revealed as much through the language as through the intense imagery. Yet they are allowed to retain their unique status as simply what they are: a dog, a horse, a musician. Marie José Burki has been participating in exhibitions since 1986. Shows have included solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Basel and the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto, as well as participation in Documenta IX. She lives and works in Brussels.
