The inaugural Anti-Colonial Pub Quiz takes place in Camden Art Centre’s café, offering an evening that reimagines the classic quiz format.
Centring on Britain’s migrant and colonial histories, the event turns the traditional pub quiz inside out, testing public knowledge of the colonial past and post-colonial present.
Most pub quizzes often reinforce a narrow version of Britishness, where certain forms of knowledge are framed as ‘general’ and selective topics dominate ideas of ‘popular culture’. As a result, a world of overlooked histories, surprising facts and global perspectives rarely features on the conventional question sheet.
The Anti-Colonial Pub Quiz takes a different approach. While the format remains familiar, the content shifts to focus on colonial histories and migrant cultures, global food, music and sport, and the politics of resistance and liberation.
Participants are invited to gather a team, enjoy drinks from the café, and take part in a lively evening of alternative knowledge and friendly competition. Prizes for winners and runners-up include books, music and treats from the legendary Londis N16.
The Anti-Colonial Pub Quiz is organised by Akshi Singh and Francis Gooding.
