Stranger’s Refuge
Paul Johnson creates work using intricately detailed collages constructed of hand-coloured shapes. Next to his subjects are otherworldly symbols, suggestive of organised belief systems and apparitions. Johnson’s work is framed by an interest in visionary and outsider art.
He scans the web for costumes, banners, logos and other paraphernalia that hint at cult activity; secretive groups with their own beliefs. His residency at Camden Arts Centre focused on a new development in his work, creating a banner and exchanges with local community, and arts and crafts groups.
