2 day course: An Introduction to Glaze Chemistry - Camden Art Centre

An Introduction to Glaze Chemistry is a 2day ceramics course led by ceramic artist Chloe Monks. During this course, students will gain a basic understanding of what glazes are and how they work.

This course will explore the fundamentals of glaze chemistry by looking at how glaze recipes are documented, and how they can be altered for students to develop their own glaze. This course is aimed at those who have a basic understanding of glaze and have some previous experience.

Students will learn how different raw materials contribute to a glaze and will cover the basic of troubleshooting within glaze development. Students will make their own glazes as well as line blends of increased additives to combining two different recipes together to create completely new glazes.

By the end of the course, students should come away with multiple glaze tests and recipes and the confidence to develop their own glaze recipes.

This course will cover:

  • The fundamentals of glaze chemistry theory
  • Learning about the properties of raw materials
  • How to calculate glaze recipes
  • Test glazes using line blends
  • Understanding how glaze application can influence results

The Artist

Chloe Monks is a contemporary ceramic artist from Bristol. Chloe graduated from the MA Ceramics & Glass programme at the Royal College of Art, which enabled her to delve deeper into investigating material possibilities within ceramics, heavily led by the changing state of a substance. The complexity of form takes centre stage in her works; form and design are planned and thought through before making contact with the material.
