2 day course: Introduction to Sign Writing - Camden Art Centre

Introduction to Sign Writing is a 2day course led by sign writer, graphic designer and lettering artist, Loughlin Brady Smith.

This course will provide an introduction to sign writing materials & techniques and how to utilise them when executing a sign.

During this course, students will be guided through demonstrations in basic brush techniques, learn about layout and design (including spacing, margins and hierarchy) and test out colour combinations for sign painting.

Through the course students will be supported to develop, plan out and sketch ideas for a sign, learning crucial decisions to make and tips when planning a sign.  Students will be provided with wooden panels prepped for painting, which they will then paint using a set text resulting in a finished sign of their own to take home.

This course will cover:

  • How to use materials, techniques and tips for sign painting
  • Sign planning and ideation
  • Brush techniques for sign writing
  • How to layout and design a sign
  • Colour combinations for sign writing
  • Resulting in a painted sign to take home

 

This course is suitable for those with little to no experience of drawing, painting or sign writing.

The Artist

Loughlin Brady Smith is a Sign Writer, Graphic Designer and Lettering Artist based in London & Dublin. Loughlin takes any opportunity he can as a designer to make and execute projects with his hands, with craft an essential part of Loughlin’s practice.

Typography and lettering has had a grasp on Loughlin for as long as he can remember, with his practice now spanning across illustration and decorative art. From hand-painted signs to murals and gilded windows in gold leaf, the charm in creating designs through the lens of craft is not only a necessity for him but is an essential element for the world in which we live in. With his opposing practices of digital and analog now nourishing each other.

Adults’ courses are 18+ unless otherwise stated.

All materials costs are included. Size restrictions apply.

Evidence of concessionary status must be shown on the first day of the course.

For every season, each person can only book and attend one of the courses on a ‘pay what you can’ ticket.

Bookings are non-refundable, unless the course is cancelled by the Centre.

The course will only go ahead if the minimum participant requirement for the course to run is met. If the course does not go ahead, bookings will be refunded.
