Art Theory: Knowing Our Place: From the Inside-Out - Camden Art Centre

Art Theory: Knowing Our Place: From the Inside-Out

Simone Kenyon will introduce and guide practical elements of her artistic and Feldenkrais practice over the course of two days.

Through practical sessions exploring embodiment and facilitated discussion, this course will examine themes relating to how we perceive and sense our physicality and how this extends into the spaces and places we inhabit.

The workshop will offer:

  • An introduction to the Feldenkrais Method®. Each day will begin and end with a Feldenkrais class which will consider our relationship with our bodies, focusing on the notion of the inside and the edges.
  • Awareness Through Movement lessons and a spaciousness to discover individual proprioception (the overall sense of body position, muscle sense and strength of movement).
  • Time to reflect on collective relationships and abilities to relate to our surroundings.

This course is suitable for adults of all ages and abilities.

This course runs in conjunction with Simone Kenyon’s talk on 25 March, 3.00 – 4.00pm. A complimentary ticket to this talk is included as part of the course fee.

The Feldenkrais Method® is an educational method focusing on learning and movement, which can bring about improved movement and enhanced functioning. It is open to all ages and abilities. Lessons take place lying on the floor, or sometimes sitting and standing. In the group sessions the facilitator leads you along movement journeys that work like a physical riddle, engaging the whole body and emphasising ease not effort.

Simone Kenyon is a UK based artist, dance maker and Feldenkrais practitioner. She creates work encompassing dance and somatic practices, walking arts, participatory events and workshops for both urban and rural contexts. Her solo work explores walking as a choreographic practice, sensory experiences in relation to our environments and ecological perspectives. She has a wide breadth of knowledge and skills informing how she creates work for and with specific places and people. She is often invited to work with other performance makers and works on collaborative projects including her 9-year collaboration with dance artists Neil Callaghan. Recent works have been presented at Fierce Festival, Birmingham, The Hayward Gallery and Sadlers Wells, London and has toured internationally in China. She is currently a Phd Candidate at the University of Leeds and her research continues to explore the embodied experiences and writing of Nan Shepherd in her book, The Living Mountain to investigate and map experiential understandings of place and making site-based performance for mountainous environments.
