Family Takeover with Tom James - Camden Art Centre

Join artist Tom James for family activities exploring the play and process of making art together.

These workshops invite children and accompanying adults to make a collective kinetic sculpture loosely inspired by the works in Liz Larner’s exhibition A Hard Line to Bend. Tom James is an artist exploring the function and future of everyday objects, his practice often focuses on re-using things that may otherwise go to waste.

Participants will produce a large scale sculptural marble run in Camden Art Centre’s Drawing Studio using reclaimed tubes, pipes, bottles, funnels and more to create unique temporary artworks. Echoing the playful work of Yves Tinguely and Fischli/Weiss, each collaborative marble run will be designed, tested and built by participants before being disassembled.

Activities are designed for children (aged 4+) and adults working together, activities may be messy.

There are two time slots on each workshop date, 11.15am – 12.15pm & 12.45 – 13.45pm.

Spaces are limited and we often have many participants on a waitlist for each session. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your order or get in touch with us so we can offer your place to another family.

20 spaces are currently available for each session, with another 20 being released two weeks before each session.

The Artist

Tom James is an artist and writer, based in London. He creates participatory projects where people can learn new skills, imagine new ways of living, and actually get their hands dirty to give them a try. His work spans live, durational installations, participative workshops, and self-published fanzines. For the past five years, it’s mainly been devoted to helping people survive and thrive in the bitter, barren future we’re creating for ourselves and our children. Tom’s projects have been featured across the British media, whilst his cult fanzine ‘GO!’ is part of the permanent collection of the V&A. Tom was a co-lead of Camden Art Centre’s SEN Schools Programme from 2022 – 2025.
