Create a festive wreath inspired by Ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging flowers.

In this workshop, artist and tutor Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck will guide participants to create a wreath inspired by the Japanese principles of Ikebana.

Unlike traditional wreath-making, this session will seek to cultivate minimalism and experimentation, with playfulness and refinement also encouraged.

The morning will begin with an introduction to Ikebana and wreath making. Participants will then be supported and guided to create a wreath in a size of their choice, from 10 to 40cm. The final piece will be suitable for hanging around the home.

All materials, provided and included, including British-grown dried plant and a selection of fresh foliage and berries that will last for several weeks.

As co-creator and co-editor of Journal du Thé, course tutor Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck will welcome students with a specially selected hot cup of organic herbal tea.

Participants must be 18 or over. Maximum class size 12.

The tutor

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck (b.1990, France) is a painter, transdisciplinary artist, and cultural practitioner based in rural Oxfordshire (England). Her practice, composed of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, film, photography, writing and participatory works, often conceals ecological messages, rendered in soft and delicate methods. In several of the artist’s projects, interaction with the environment and others plays a central role. Solo exhibitions include Dreaming of Tomorrow at Nidi Gallery in Tokyo. Recent group exhibitions include Soil at Somerset House, The Equal Right to Live and Blossom at Kate MacGarry and Edge Effects at Whitechapel Gallery, in London. Books on her practice have been published by InOtherWords Imprint, Chose Commune and Jane & Jeremy. Johanna is the founder of Poetic Pastel Press and The Gardening Drawing Cub and co-founder of Journal du Thé – Contemporary Tea Culture.

Johanna has been an Ohara Ikebana student since 2018 and is currently in the second term of the Assistant Teacher’s course under Master Ruriko Kojima. She grows flowers, tisanes, vegetables and dye plants on allotment plots following permaculture and natural farming principles.
