Working across a range of media including sculpture, collage, animation and video, Salvatore Arancio’s main interests lie in the potential of images.
Departing from their literal meanings, he creates new juxtapositions that are evocative and deeply disquieting. His works look to nature and science for inspiration, unsettling any hint of the sublime by re-framing images and the viewer’s experience.
For the Fellowship, Arancio looked to create works that are inspired by different forms of representation of the grotesque and the natural and their relationships to popular myths. He will look at the ways this is depicted in traditional pottery factories and workshops including: Olérys and Laugiers, Moustiers, France in the 1700s; Fontana Workshop, Urbino Italy in the 1500s; and the Martin Brothers, Southall, England in the 1800s.
This research went towards creating a film and a new series of ceramic sculptures alongside a series of public programme events throughout his residency.
