Summer Short Course: Materiality and Movement - Camden Art Centre

Summer Short Course: Materiality and Movement

Saturday 12 & Saturday 19 August, 10.30am – 4.30pm

During this two day course participants will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of approaches to making and materials, including raw clay, pigments, textiles and the body.  The course aims to enhance consciousness of actions by tracing movements in space, material memory and mark making.

Week 1: The first week will consider the idea and act of making. Using clay, participants will investigate movement, mark making and negative space and consider how we can communicate through our choice of materials.

Week 2: The second week will consider the possibilities of performance. What does a performance consist of? How can body movements be traced in space? Through practice and conversation, participants will consider the meaning of artistic labour and reflect on the role that materials and the artist’s body can play in the production of work.

This course coincides with Jennifer Tee's exhibition Let it Come Down. It is suitable for beginners and those wishing to develop their practice. All materials are provided.

Renata Bandeira will lead this course. Renata completed an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art and is a visiting lecturer at University of Westminster since 2012. Her practice employs sculpture, performance, collaboration, education and drawing. Through the use of geometrical forms as an active non-verbal vocabulary, her work explores ideas of choice, synchronicity, memory and gesture, while exposing the process of making and unfolding states of flux.
