Join Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck in our garden this April for The Gardening Drawing Club, a series of creative workshops celebrating the joys of gardening, drawing, community and well-being.

Inclusive and open to all, discover the various creative possibilities of plants in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

About The Gardening Drawing Club 

Founded in 2021, The Gardening Drawing Club is a series of unique events with a holistic approach offering free access to arts and horticulture in Britain. With monthly happenings, The Gardening Drawing is hosted in a broad range of locations, from art centres to community gardens and temples; the events range from workshops to talks and experiences. Veganic gardening methods are employed through The Gardening Drawing Club, advocating for gentleness and compassion while supporting seed sovereignty, racial, climate and land justice and reparation, biodiversity, and animal liberation. The Gardening Drawing Club has a shared mission to integrate the joys of gardening and drawing in others’ lives for individual and community well-being.

Wednesday 13 & Thursday 14 April, 1.30-3.30pm

In this creative workshop, Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck will encourage you to think and draw the life of a broad bean, including your possible memories. Broad beans will be planted for a tactile experience with seeds and soil. The participants may take all plants and drawings home; these will be offered to be bound into a booklet for you.  

Biodegradable pots and organic broad beans seeds grown in the UK will be used for this workshop.  

Friday 15 & Saturday 16 April, 1.30-3.30pm

In this creative workshop, Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck will guide the participants to creating a flower arrangement following, or almost, the Japanese principles of Ikebana. Drawings will be made on paper cups to hold the flowers. All flowers and drawings may be taken home by the participants.  

Flowers employed in this workshop are grown in the UK using organic methods. A few flowers, including wildflowers, will originate from Johanna’s allotment.

Sunday 17 April, 1.30-3.30pm

Using the garden as inspiration, this workshop will revolve around learning the process of using plants to create natural dyes and organic fabrics. As part of the workshop the artworks produced will be used to create a garden installation.

Additional Information

  • In case of rainy weather ponchos and umbrellas will be provided, but please make sure to wear appropriate clothing for active outdoor activities. 
  • Our café will be open providing refreshments and toilet access will be provided.

The Artist

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck (b.1990, Strasbourg, France) is a painter, transdisciplinary artist and cultural practitioner artist based in rural Oxfordshire (England). Her practice composed of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, film, photography and writing often conceals ecological messages, rendered in soft and delicate methods. In several of the artist’s projects, interaction with the environment and others plays a central role. Solo and duo exhibitions include By Your Side at HOME By RM in London and The Things I made at Nidi Gallery in Tokyo. Books on her practice have been published by InOtherWords Imprint, Chose Commune and Jane & Jeremy. In 2014, Johanna founded the positive and collaborative cultural project Poetic Pastel. In 2018, the artist co-founded the publication series Journal du Thé – Contemporary Tea Culture. In 2021 she founded The Gardening Drawing Club.
